A fire that destroyed an unoccupied Ford Explorer in downtown Kelowna last week was caused by a car bomb, Mounties confirmed Friday.

The vehicle, which was parked on Lawrence Avenue near several bars and clubs, was found in flames at around 1 a.m. on Jan. 11.

Const. Kris Clark said the attack appears to have been targeted but RCMP have not confirmed whether it was gang-related.

“We don’t believe this act to be random, but there’s no motive yet determined,” Clark said.

No information about the vehicle’s owner has been released.

Authorities say no one was injured when the bomb, described by Mounties as a “low-order explosive device,” detonated.

“The concussion from the explosive would have shattered some glass [in the car] but didn’t cause any damage to the surrounding buildings or vehicles,” said Clark.

Anyone with information on the attack is asked to call the Kelowna RCMP detachment at 250-762-3300, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they wish to remain anonymous
