Police are searching for more witnesses after a cyclist was killed on the Stanley Park causeway Saturday night.
A woman was biking near the Lions Gate Bridge when she was struck by a West Vancouver transit bus, killing her instantly, according to police.
Police believe the woman had a run-in with pedestrians, who share causeway sidewalks with cyclists, causing her to fall off the sidewalk and into the path of the bus.
“There are several signs marked along the causeway…the cyclists are supposed to yield to pedestrians," said Const. Brian Montague.
Crews had the crash documented and cleaned up after about four hours, but the effects of the incident could be felt for much longer.
“I would imagine the bus driver is quite upset,” Montague said. “The bus was full at the time of the collision.”
Traffic was halted in both directions following the collision, which occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday.
Montague said investigators are still trying to determine what happened just before the collision between the cyclist and pedestrians that caused her to fall off the sidewalk.
The victim was not carrying identification and police are now trying to identify her.
Investigators are asking any other witnesses who were on the bus at the time to contact them to provide more information.
It’s just the latest fatal collision in the causeway and Lions Gate Bridge area. A 27-year-old motorcyclist was killed on the bridge last Tuesday after he struck a northbound SUV.
Last November a three-vehicle crash involving a transit bus resulted in the deaths of two men aged 20 and 21.
It is estimated up to 70,000 vehicles traverse the causeway and Lions Gate Bridge every day.
