A man is expected to live after being shot inside of a Burnaby Cactus Club Tuesday afternoon.
It happened at around 1:45 p.m. inside the Cactus Club at 4600 Kingsway, across from Metrotown, according to Burnaby RCMP.
The victim was eating at the popular restaurant when he was shot by a male suspect, according to Insp. Steve Wade. The suspect then fled the scene.
Police said the shooting was likely targeted but it's unclear whether there are any gang connections.
“That’s a very scary situation for everybody, for the police and for the general public. Innocent bystanders, people walking by…We have no idea why this occurred at this time,” Wade said.
The number of people in the restaurant when shots were fired is unclear, but police are canvassing witnesses for more information.
Nobody else was injured in the shooting, Wade confirmed.
Police shut down Kingsway between Sussex and Willingdon Avenues as they searched the area for a suspect. The road was not expected to reopen for several hours.
One woman on Twitter claimed she was having lunch when the incident unfolded.
“Was having lunch heard shots and ducked under table,” Christina Ghuman wrote.
The victim has not been identified.
