A mother and her two teenage daughters were able to make it out of their home safely after flames broke out just after 5 a.m.

Neighbours called 911 after seeing smoke and flames billowing out of the two-storey home on Hoskins Road, in the Lynn Valley area. A huge plume of smoke could be seen across Burrard Inlet from downtown Vancouver.

Homes on either side had to be evacuated as crews flooded the street and attacked the blaze.

It took more than a dozen firefighters to douse the flames, according to Mike Cairns of North Van District Fire.

“It was an exterior attack, we had four crews here and it was an aggressive exterior attack and it took about an hour to get it totally under control,” he said.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but it likely started in the garage. Two vehicles in the driveway were damaged in the blaze.
