RCMP officers in North Vancouver spent the night scouring a steep and rugged path up the side of Grouse Mountain, looking for clues that could lead them to the suspect in an apparently unprovoked stabbing.

A 53-year-old man was climbing the BC Mountaineering Club trail -- which parallels the Grouse Grind, just east of that busy route -- when he says he was stabbed by a man who was walking down the trail at about 4 p.m. yesterday.

The victim is now being treated in hospital for a serious wound to his abdomen, but is expected to be okay, and Mounties with service dogs fanned out along the side of Grouse, hoping to track the attacker.

The BCMC trail was closed overnight as officers checked to ensure there were no more victims along the roughly three kilometre path.
