After more than a year of searching for the killer of a 16-year-old First Nations girl in Kamloops, RCMP announced Sunday they have made an arrest.

On December 5, 2012 C.J. Fowler’s body was found near Guerin Creek in Kamloops by a man walking his dog.

A warrant was issued on Thursday and on Friday police arrested 22-year-old Damien Lawrence Taylor in Kelowna without incident.

Police believe Taylor and Fowler were dating at the time of Fowler’s death.

Taylor is currently being held in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Police say he is not considered a suspect in any other active or ongoing investigations.

A member of the Gitanmaax First Nation in Hazelton, B.C., Fowler’s murder prompted Assembly of First Nations Chief Shaw Atleo to urge the Canadian government to make the matter of violence against Aboriginal women a high priority.
