If the thought of a romantic Valentine's Day makes you cringe, a Vancouver hotel is putting a new spin on an old tradition with an Anti-Valentine’s Day package.

The Sutton Place Hotel is offering up an accommodation package for the happily unattached. Making light of single stereotypes, it includes a “Build Your Own Sundae”, a black rose and voodoo doll. Guests will also be provided with unlimited movies and complimentary porterage for their “extra baggage”.

“It’s meant to be a lot of fun and some people use it as a retreat, they hunker down in the room and watch movies or some people, the majority of people we’ve seen come with a gang of girls or guys and make it a celebration of being single,” said Kyle Matheson, The Sutton Place Hotel Sales & Marketing Director.

For those people who will be celebrating Valentine’s Day, a new survey by the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association has found that the average consumer will spend $116 on the holiday.

Here’s a breakdown of where consumers will spend:

  • 52 per cent will buy cards
  • 48 per cent will buy candy
  • 34 per cent will buy flowers
  • 17 per cent will buy jewelry

And men may want to listen up, because 53 per cent of women surveyed said they would end their relationship if they didn’t get something for Valentine’s Day.
