A new BCAA survey appears set to honour Kelowna with the dubious distinction of having the worst road in the province.
The 2013 “Worst Roads” survey, conducted annually by the automobile association, invited British Columbians to cast their votes for the paved paths they consider to be in the worst condition.
With voting set to close Monday, Kelowna’s Westside Road occupied the top spot, with voters citing its pothole problems and crumbling pavement as the road’s main issues.
BCAA defined a “worst road” as any paved infrastructure that:
- is poorly designed or maintained for pedestrian and cycling safety
- has poor road signs or markings
- has damaging potholes or crumbling pavement
- has poorly timed traffic lights
- is poorly designed and contributes to traffic congestion
Other notorious roads in the top ten included Station Street in Vancouver, a crumbling, pothole-filled street near Pacific Central Station.
Richmond’s George Massey Tunnel cracked the list, with many saying traffic congestion through the tunnel is a massive issue.
As of Sunday, Prince George was the city that held the most spots in the top ten, with four roads being called out for potholes and crumbling pavement.
BCAA says the results of the survey will be shared with government to encourage road improvements.
