The Vancouver Police Department is launching a new program designed to protect members of the LGBTQ community who are being attacked or harassed.
Safe Place is a voluntary program for businesses, schools and other locations in the city that want to offer their space to victims of anti-LGBTQ crimes.
“Essentially you are supporting victims to enter your premises, assisting them to call the police, and allowing them to wait until we arrive,” Const. Dale Quiring said in a short video announcing the program.
People can spot Safe Place locations by a rainbow-coloured decal in the shape of a police badge.
Business owners who decided to take part must sign a commitment pledge agreeing to help victims and to instruct employees to do the same.
Security concerns around this year’s Pride celebrations have been heightened in the wake of last month’s mass shooting in Florida, which targeted a popular gay club.
