A joke sign that unofficially renamed an East Vancouver recreation space “Dude Chilling Park” last year may soon be given a permanent place in the city.

On Monday, the park board will vote on a motion asking staff to find a home for the homemade sign, which was sneakily installed at the corner of Guelph Park in November.

Board Chair Sarah Byth’s motion said many organizations and residents have suggested ideas to honour the sign “as a piece of civic art.”

It was removed by city staff shortly after it was put up, but pictures spread quickly on social media and an online petition calling to save the sign gathered more than 1,700 signatures.

If the motion is adopted, the sign could be used to rename Guelph Park or to name a yet-unnamed public space.

Have your say: Should Vancouver embrace Dude Chilling Park?
