Mysterious lights floating over Vancouver Island prompted several calls to police this week, but Mulder and Scully can probably sit this one out.
Nanaimo RCMP said numerous people reported seeing strange, unexplained lights hovering over Dover Road around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, and officers headed into the area to investigate.
What they found was a man in a mall parking lot who admitted he’d been flying a box kite with LED lights attached extremely high in the air.
“The man has been spoken to about the dangers associated with flying an object high enough to possibly pose a danger to flight traffic,” Cpl. Jon Stuart said in a statement.
“We also believe this was the source of the lights seen by many people, floating in the sky.”
Mounties said the kite was flying up to 10,000 feet up when the line broke and left the kite soaring away erratically.
No charges are being considered in the case.
According to the UFO BC website there have been at least six other mysterious sightings reported so far this year in the province, including a “very intense bright blue crown of lights” reported from Burnaby.
