Two Transit Police officers accused of assaulting and pepper-spraying a 27-year-old man outside the Granville SkyTrain Station earlier this year have been charged.

Alfred Wong and Bruce Shipley allegedly approached the man, who was sitting on a staircase leading onto Seymour Street, on Feb. 9 after overhearing that someone matching his description was in distress.

The alleged assault, the severity of which has not been confirmed by police, occurred after the man tried to walk away.

Investigators from the Vancouver Police Department were called to independently probe the confrontation and found sufficient evidence to recommend criminal charges.

After reviewing their report, Crown counsel approved a single count of assault against each officer.

They are scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 5.
