The search for a missing six-year-old boy on the North Shore has ended in tragedy.

The child was discovered face-down in Taylor Creek Thursday afternoon, not far from his family home, and died shortly after in BC Children’s Hospital.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the grieving family at this time,” RCMP Supt. Chris Kennedy said in a statement. “This is a most tragic incident that touches all our lives.”

The boy, whose name hasn’t been released, was reported missing in the Bowron Court area of North Vancouver around 1:45 p.m. RCMP, North Shore Rescue and BC Ambulance Service were called to help locate him.

Mounties found the child unresponsive in the creek minutes after arriving and performed CPR until he could be airlifted to hospital, but it was too late.

Victim Services are being brought in for the deceased’s family.

Authorities warn that creeks and rivers are swollen and fast-running due to heavy rainfall, and should be avoided.

North Vancouver RCMP is continuing to investigate but said the case will be handed over to the BC Coroners Service.
