A two-year-old child and four adults have been hospitalized after a pickup truck swerved into oncoming traffic Monday afternoon in Langley.

Witnesses said the pickup started spinning out of control while heading westbound on 16th Avenue near 264 Street. The vehicle eventually veered into the path of a Camaro, which T-boned the pickup and burst into flames.

There were three occupants in each vehicle, and only one managed to walk away uninjured.

Cpl. Holly Marks said the roads were slippery but investigators are still trying to determine whether speed or winter weather were factors in the crash.

“We don’t know what caused the pickup truck to enter the other lane,” Marks said, adding that it could have been an attempt to U-turn or pass another vehicle.

Witnesses said the Camaro didn’t appear to be speeding before the collision.

Two of the three men in the pickup were seriously hurt, including the driver, who was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries, Mounties said. One lucky passenger was unharmed.

Marks said the toddler and the man driving the Camaro suffered broken wrists while a woman in the passenger seat sustained an abdominal injury from her seatbelt.

All three managed to flee the car after it caught fire and are expected to survive their injuries.

Anyone who saw the crash or has information to help investigators is asked to call the Langley RCMP detachment at 604-532-3200.
