Westjet is warning that a telephone scam circulating around Canada is using the airline’s name in an effort to dupe consumers into giving up their credit card information.

The company says this is the third time the scam– which pops up every six months – has surfaced.

Operators tell the caller they’ve qualified for a free vacation package because they fly with Westjet.  It then asks consumers to provide their credit card information.

CTV Calgary reporter Lea Williams-Doherty received a similar call last week. The operator said she’d won a trip to Cancun and directed her to go a website to see the 5-star accommodation.

He then asked for her credit card number to secure the trip and pay the discounted hotel rate.

Westjet says it never does any telephone marketing or gives guests’ information to any third-party companies.

The company says previous versions of this scam have been tracked to a Mexican vacation company.
