A Surrey teenager has died after being seriously wounded by a falling tree near Clayton Heights Secondary School.
Emergency crews were called to the scene shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Friday for reports that a tree had pinned a teenager to the ground.
Surrey Deputy Fire Chief Larry Thomas told CTV News it took four men to lift the tree off the 15-year-old boy. He was rushed to hospital, but unfortunately he could not be saved.
The Surrey RCMP Youth Section is currently investigating the incident.
They said it appears that the high winds may have caused the tree to fall. Police are asking the public to stay out of wooded areas during a wind warning currently in effect in Metro Vancouver.
The high winds rushing through the area are due to a series of three storms passing over the province's South Coast. Wind gusts have been blamed for numerous fallen trees across the region, including one that crashed into a car in Burnaby, and others that have knocked out power to tens of thousands of customers.
This is heartbreaking. Clouds just broke over Clayton Heights Sec where 15yo student killed by tree. This is across street. @CTVVancouver pic.twitter.com/zObH63LzBx
