VANCOUVER - B.C.'s education minister says he's encouraged by the prospect of the teachers' union submitting a new contract proposal as the clock ticks down to a full-scale strike.
Peter Fassbender says he's optimistic after hearing the head of the BC Teachers' Union announce its negotiators will be presenting a revised bargaining package when the parties get back to the table.
During an announcement about strike action starting Tuesday, BCTF president Jim Iker said the union has modified its proposals, including lowering wage demands.
A ruling by the provincial labour board today also ensures senior students will have their exams marked, and the minister says schools will be open for students to write in spite of picket lines.
Fassbender says he's profoundly sorry that students, parents and even teachers are being affected by a situation that is stressful for everyone.
The 72-hours strike notice issued this morning means that unless a deal is reached over the weekend, Friday will be the last day of classes for the school year.
