Dozens of search and rescue volunteers have been told to step down after it was revealed the German man reported missing in Tofino, B.C., this week may have boarded a ferry.
Sander Jain was last seen by friends on Canada Day at around 1:00 p.m., when he told them he was going to hike down the Bomber Trail in Pacific Rim National Park.
Later that day, Jain was expected to move out of his hotel room and into an apartment he had rented. He never did, and he didn't show up to work on Thursday or Friday either.
He was reported missing Friday night. Search teams spent the evening and much of Saturday morning scouring the trails and beaches of the park, while the coast guard conducted a search of the water.
Now, search commander Garth Cameron says they have learned that Jain bought a bus ticket in Tofino, and was last seen by the bus driver in the parking lot of a Nanaimo ferry terminal.
Cameron says it's a good outcome - but adds that the search effort cost between $8,000 and $10,000.
