Popular NDP MLA Gregor Robertson is widely expected to seek the mayor's chair with support from the Vision Vancouver party when he makes a formal announcement on Sunday.
The Vancouver-Fairview MLA reportedly announced his intention to the NDP caucus on Thursday, but says only he will be making 'an announcement' at the Vancouver Museum on Sunday.
The race for mayor is becoming more crowded after Vancouver city councillor Peter Ladner declared his intention to run for mayor under the Non-Partisan Association's banner.
"When I am on a team and I see the ship heading towards the rocks, I feel an obligation to change course and offer an alternative," Ladner told reporters on Thursday.
But the NPA party maintains a policy of supporting incumbent candidates, and Mayor Sam Sullivan has already stated his intention to run again.
Ladner now has to convince the NPA board that it should hold an open nomination meeting and not simply endorse Sullivan.
The NPA is conducting polls to gauge the mood of the voters, clearly not wanting to back a losing candidate.
Ladner has spent six years in civic politics.
Vision Vancouver Councillor Raymond Louie and Parks Board Commissioner Allan De Genova have also expressed interest in the job.
