VICTORIA - B.C. Finance Minister Colin Hansen says the worldwide recession is likely to affect the provincial bottom line for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler.
Hansen said Wednesday the government is currently reviewing and revising its economic forecasts for the Games.
Last month, the government said the Olympics were expected to create an economic windfall of $10.7 billion for British Columbia. Hansen said that's now changing.
"I'm not exactly sure of the timeline but there is a new study that's being done to try to update some of the economic impact of the Olympic and Paralympic Games," Hansen said.
The government's $10.7 billion figure came from a study completed about two years ago by the Royal Bank of Canada, he said.
The recession "will obviously have some impact," Hansen said.
Hansen -- who noted the Games have enjoyed strong ticket sales -- said the government will make its new Olympic projections public. The Liberal government forecast deficit budgets for 2009 and 2010, but expects the province will be back in the black by 2011.
A Central 1 Credit Union report has said the province was in a recession since the middle of last year, something Hansen denied near the end of 2008.
