A rash of recent overdoses in Vancouver is now being blamed on the potent painkiller fentanyl.
Police sent drug samples to Health Canada for testing after roughly a dozen people overdosed in a matter of days in the city.
Though the drugs were initially believed to be high-grade heroin, police confirmed Wednesday they were actually straight fentanyl.
A woman also died Sunday of a suspected overdose, but authorities haven’t confirmed whether heroin or fentanyl were involved.
Drug users have been warned to be extremely cautious and not consume drugs alone. If possible, they are encouraged to use the Insite safe injection facility, where medical personnel can help if they overdose.
Those who witness someone in medical distress should call 911 immediately. Police also urge anyone who doesn’t feel well after using drugs to seek medical attention or help.
