SURREY, B.C. - British Columbia's independent police watchdog is sending a report to Crown counsel after investigating a fatal RCMP shooting in Surrey.
The Criminal Justice Branch must now decide if charges are warranted against any officers in connection with the July 18, 2015 shooting in south Surrey.
The Independent Investigations Office found the shooting occurred as officers responded to reports of a possibly suicidal man outside an RCMP detachment.
The BC Coroner's Service later identified the victim as 20-year-old Hudson Brooks.
The IIO must file a report to Crown lawyers after a police-involved serious injury or death.
The threshold for forwarding reports to the Criminal Justice branch is lower for the IIO than for other agencies, and Crown counsel must make the final decision about proceeding with any charges.
