Homicide investigators have decided not to search the Vancouver Landfill for the remains of a baby believed to have been murdered earlier this year.
Vancouver police believe the infant was born at a home in the 2500-block of Charles Street in early March and has not been seen since. Investigators are convinced the baby is dead and are searching for remains.
Const. Jana McGuiness said police decided not to expand their search to the landfill, located south of the city in Delta, after consulting with the BC Coroner's Service and outside experts.
"Investigators now believe that a search of the landfill would not result in the recovery of the infant's remains," McGuinness said in a release.
The search began on Charles Street on April 1. Investigators hauled a number of bags away from a home belonging to a family who one year earlier reported finding a dead baby outdoors.
Police did not label that child's death a homicide, but did classify it as suspicious. The baby's autopsy was inconclusive, and the investigation is ongoing.
Police say the baby found last year and the child currently missing share the same mother. Her identity has not been confirmed, but police say she is in her late teens or early 20s.
