Although an arrest has yet to be made in the murder of 18-year-old Kimberly Proctor last week, police say that tips from the public have led to almost 200 leads requiring further investigation.
The teenager's badly burned body was discovered on March 19 along the Galloping Goose hiking trail near Langford, B.C.
Since then, Vancouver Island RCMP say they have received almost 100 tips from members of the public, and spoken to hundreds of people.
A team of 40 officers is working on the case.
Cpl. Darren Lagan said in a statement Friday that officers would continue to canvas areas that Proctor is thought to have visited in the time leading up to her death.
He also pleaded with members of the public to consider the consequences of giving police false information -- there have been reports of people spreading rumours about the murder in online postings.
"We do not want to waste valuable time investigating false claims, statements, and alike. This detracts from the very important task of solving Kimberly's homicide," Lagan said.
Police have also said they are investigating comments that Proctor made online in the months before she was killed.
Days before her murder, she posted on Facebook about a "psycho" ex-boyfriend with "really bad anger issues."
She also posted messages on a website called Vampire Freaks, revealing that she had been bullied by other teenage girls.
