Would you like the option of buying a cold beer while lounging at Vancouver’s beaches?

That’s a question the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation will be asking people over the May Long Weekend as it works out a new business strategy for 13 of its beach and park concession stands.

“With the exception of the Spanish Banks East concession, facilities have not seen major upgrades in many years,” the board’s website says.

“Some are beginning to show signs of aging and are in need of investment to improve their condition and design.”

Apart from potential alcohol sales, the board is mulling whether to diversify food selections or even convert concessions into full-service restaurants.

Over the Victoria Day weekend, staff members will be gathering feedback from the public at Kitsilano Beach, Spanish Banks, Second Beach, Third Beach, Lumberman’s Arch and the Stanley Park Information Booth.

There’s also an online survey where people can weigh in. When it comes to booze sales, the poll offers four possible preferences: beer, micro-brew beer, cocktails, and wine.

It also asks a blanket question about whether respondents agree or disagree with selling alcohol at concessions “if provided in a responsible manner.”

The online survey is running until May 23, and will be followed by a focus group session on May 31. The new concession strategy is expected to go to the park board for approval on June 27.
