Nearly one year after the 2010 Olympics, and years after social housing was pledged as part of the Games legacy, a manager has been selected for the affordable housing units in the Olympic village.
Vancouver City Council has approved selection of The Co-operative Housing Federation of B.C., to oversee the mixed housing project.
Mayor Gregor Robertson says it means people who have been on waiting lists for affordable homes can begin moving into the suites before Christmas.
The Co-operative Housing Federation will run one of the three buildings as a co-op, and will act as interim manager for the other two until another non-profit is chosen.
In September, the province rejected all three bids to run the social housing component at the former athlete's village, prompting Vancouver to act alone.
The Olympic village, on the southeast shore of False Creek, has been described as a ghost town as most of the 252 suites earmarked for social housing and market rental remained unoccupied while the search for a manager was underway.
