Mounties in Kamloops are on the verge of announcing a major development in a cold case that has been haunting the community for 16 years.
Sherri McLaughlin, 20, was riding her mountain bike to a boyfriend's house in the summer of 1993 when she vanished. Her bike with a damaged front wheel and her backpack were later found.
While investigators say they believe they know who's responsible for her disappearance, they say there's just not enough evidence to support a charge.
Police say there are things about the investigation that have been kept from the family and the time has come for them to know.
McLaughlin's parents, her brother and her 17-year-old son, who was just a year old at the time she disappeared, are expected to attend a press conference Thursday morning.
