Mounties are asking for the public's help in tracking down a driver who killed a young Surrey man earlier this month, and the victim's mother is adding her voice to the call for justice.
Shamus MacKay, 19, had just stepped off an eastbound bus on Fraser Highway near 168 Street in the early morning hours of Sept. 4 when he was hit and killed by a car. The driver didn't stop.
"I just can't imagine anybody hitting somebody and not stopping. It just doesn't make sense to me," Shamus's mother Anne said.
"Shamus had a heart. He even gave clothes off his back to people. If anyone was in trouble he would be the first one there to help them. He was just loved very much."
On Wednesday, Surrey RCMP revealed that someone did contact them with a tip about the crash.
"Shortly after the collision, the Surrey RCMP -- our traffic section -- were contacted by a lawyer for someone who identified they wanted to turn themselves in," Const. Peter Neily said.
The suspect never appeared, and police have been unable to contact the lawyer.
"We do have someone out there who knows that they were involved in this incident. We need you to get in touch with us and turn yourself in," Neily said.
Police believe the car that struck and killed Shamus was a late-model Volkswagen Jetta, but no colour has been confirmed. However, it's likely that the vehicle would have extensive front-end damage.
"If you have a neighbour that has this type of vehicle, if you have a co-worker that has this type of vehicle, and mysteriously you haven't seen it since the night of that accident, we need to know about that," Neily said.
