Woman who drove into river with kids in car facing attempted murder charges, police say
A driver who allegedly drove into the Fraser River on purpose while two young children were in the vehicle with her has been charged with attempted murder, according to Delta police.
The incident occurred on the morning of Nov. 29 in the 8200 block of River Road. The Delta Police Department said in a news release that its officers were called to the scene for "a report of a car having been driven intentionally into the Fraser River."
When they arrived, officers found the vehicle "off road" and "stuck in the foreshore of the river," not in the water. Firefighters and bystanders were already present and helping the driver and the children.
At the time, police said both the children and the driver had been transported to hospital. The children were taken for observation, with "no apparent injuries noted," according to police. The driver received treatment.
In its initial statement on the matter, the DPD said it was conducting a criminal investigation.
In an update Wednesday, the department said two charges of attempted murder had been sworn against the driver of the car. She has been arrested and remains in custody awaiting her first court appearance, police said.
Police did not name the accused, saying a publication ban is in place to protect the identity of the children.
"The DPD wishes to express gratitude to members of the public and the Delta Fire Department who intervened and provided assistance to the involved parties," the DPD statement concludes.
