Pedestrian dead after being struck by car in New Westminster
Police in New Westminster have closed McBride Boulevard following a crash that killed a pedestrian early Wednesday morning.
According to a release issued by the New Westminster Police Department, the pedestrian was struck by a car in the 300 block of McBride Boulevard. The driver remained on scene.
The road will be closed in both directions, between 6th Avenue and Memorial Drive, for several hours, it said.
With traffic backed up as far as the Bridgeview area of King George Boulevard, commuters are advised to expect delays and take an alternate route where possible.
“All the contributing factors of this incident are still under investigation,” said the release.
Speaking to CTV News Wednesday, Sgt. Andrew Leaver issued a warning to commuters taking to the roads on dark, wintry mornings.
"This time of year, it's still dark until the later morning hours, we encourage drivers to take their time, slow down, make sure they have good visibility. Sometimes the conditions aren't ideal," he said.
"We encourage any pedestrians that are crossing to make sure that cars are going to stop," he said, adding that "highly visible clothing" is recommended for those crossing the streets on foot.
Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact the NWPD at 604-525-5411.
