COLWOOD, B.C. -

Mounties on Vancouver Island believe a terrifying sex assault which saw a teenage girl bound and sexually assaulted for nearly 12 hours may not be an isolated incident.

The suspect, a man in his 40s, offered the 16-year-old a ride home while she was walking home by herself in Saanich, B.C., early on Saturday morning.

West Shore RCMP say the girl stayed in the car on her own free will until the man refused to let her out of the vehicle.

The victim was knocked out. She woke up bound inside the man's suburban Victoria View Royal home.

She was then physically and sexually assaulted for nearly 12 hours. The man also made death threats against her, police said.

The girl finally convinced her attacker to let her go around 4 p.m.

A 45-year-old View Royal resident was arrested around 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

"A search of his residence was conducted through judicial authorization and corroborating evidence was seized," Cpl. G.B. Sutherland said in a statement.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in Western Communities Provincial Court in Colwood, B.C., Tuesday.

Police are recommending charges of assault causing bodily harm, uttering death threats, unlawful confinement and aggravated sexual assault.
