A joint investigation by RCMP and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States has ended in the conviction of a Maple Ridge man for scamming elderly U.S. residents.
Gordon Sloan pleaded guilty to seven counts of fraud and has been sentenced to eight months in jail by a Port Coquitlam Court judge.
Sloan operated an illegal telemarketing business where he would contact U.S. residents, telling them they were finalists in a lottery, but were required to send in a fee ranging from $800 to $3,000.
None of the victims received tickets or any winnings.
