The victim of a fatal shooting in a residential area of Coquitlam tried to drive away after he was shot six or seven times, say witnesses.
The incident happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday night on a quiet cul-de-sac on Marathon Court, near Brunette and Schoolhouse.
After being shot, the victim drove a few blocks west on Brunette and crashed into a bus stop before coming to a stop.
“A witness in the area attempted to provide attempted to provide emergency first aid to the driver of the vehicle until the BC Ambulance Service arrived,” said Sgt. Jennifer Pound.
When police found him he was severely injured, suffering multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Royal Columbian Hospital but died a short time later.
Witnesses say up to seven shots were fired from what sounded like an automated weapon, and a suspect was seen running from the scene on foot.
Witness reports that a bag of white powder was found underneath a vehicle have not been confirmed.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has confirmed the incident is a murder, and teams will be at the scene all day.
Sgt. Pound said the victim, a man in his 30s, was known to police. She said the shooting is targeted and gang-related.
