Mounties and a Canadian Navy bomb disposal team were called to a Langley, B.C., seniors' home after a resident's family found a grenade in her room.

Cpl.. Holly Marks says the family was helping the woman, who is in her late 90s, move out of the facility on July 26 when they found the explosive on her bookshelf.

It was being used as a paper weight, Marks said, as were two rounds of ammunition.

The disposal team determined the grenade had a live fuse and that the detonator was potentially intact. Officers taped the grenade's safety lever down and the explosive was removed from the home safely.

Family members told police they didn't know how the weapons ended up in the room.

Marks advised residents to never touch possible explosives they come across at home. No matter how old they look, they may still be dangerous, she said.

"Don't handle the item or move it," she said. "It's better to move the people away and call us and we'll assess."

The grenade was destroyed by the bomb squad at an undisclosed location, she said.
