Langley RCMP are conducting an internal investigation after two officers mistakenly arrested a man who they thought was a suspect in a vehicle theft.

Two plainclothes officers approached the Polish immigrant at a bus stop on Thursday night and arrested him for theft of an all-terrain vehicle which was set up by the police as a bait car.

The man, who does not speak English, struggled with the officers and suffered cuts on his face and knees.

But the man was not the suspect they were looking for, and he was later released.

Cpl. Peter Thiessen told reporters an investigation is the right thing to do.

"This gentleman deserves an apology, he deserves an apology generally from this office and from the RCMP specifically," he said.

"He did nothing wrong, he was simply sitting at a bus stop. It's the right thing to do."

Officers later caught the real suspect and charged him.

Cpl. Thiessen said the force is especially sensitive to the situation after Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski died after officers Tasered him at the Vancouver airport last October.
