An inmate serving a life sentence for a 1984 murder has escaped from the Ferndale Institution in Mission, B.C.

Prison staff noticed James Edward Rogers, 58, was missing during a head count Sunday morning, and Mounties have issued a warrant for his arrest.

Rogers is described as a balding Caucasian male, 5-4 tall, 144 lbs. with brown eyes.

The Ferndale Institution is a minimum-security federal facility that houses 129 male offenders.

According to the Correctional Services of Canada, only inmates assessed as having a low risk to public safety are placed there.
