Investigators from the Transportation Safety Board have been dispatched to the scene of an ultralight plane crash east of Vancouver.

The lone pilot was killed after the plane came down not long after it took off from the Abbotsford airport en route to Pitt Meadows Monday afternoon.

An official with TSB told CTV News the ultralight pilot encountered bad weather and called the tower to say he’d be returning to the airport.

Heavy rain and darkness meant rescuers were not able to find the crash site until about 9 p.m. Monday night, around five hours after the aircraft went down in a field.

The wreckage caused traffic chaos on Highway 1 this morning. Detours were put in place on the higway after first responders realized the plane took out several high-transmission power lines on the way down.

Significant repair work is expected to be conducted throughout the day. BC Hydro spokesperson Simi Heer told CTV Morning Live crews may have to construct a road into the rain-soaked field before major repairs could begin.

No further details have been provided about the pilot.
