Grab your sunscreen and sunglasses: It’s going to be a scorcher on B.C.’s south coast this long weekend.

Environment Canada predicts the mercury will soar above 32 degrees in Metro Vancouver, and come close to 40 degrees in other parts of the province, including the Interior and Fraser Valley.

Kamloops, Osoyoos and Lytoon – frequently cited as the hottest place in B.C. – could reach a scorching 42 degrees on Sunday.

"There’s a change in the weather pattern and summer's going to arrive with a vengeance," said Environment Canada meteorologist David Jones.

A ridge of high pressure moving through the coast could push temperatures up to record-high levels, added Jones.

The temperatures still pale in comparison to the heat wave baking parts of the western U.S.  It's expected to reach 54 degrees in some parts of California.

People are being reminded to stay hydrated and slather on the sunscreen.

The Weather Network’s UV Report indicated high UV sun exposure risks in Vancouver this weekend, specifically between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the rays are strongest.

Vancouver Coastal Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Carsley says prolonged stretches of hot weather can pose risks for vulnerable members of the population.

Carsley advised residents to check on any elderly relations or friends.

“Make sure they have ways of keeping cool,” he said.

He also advises people who are planning to exercise to pay close attention to the temperature.

“Once it gets about 27 cut back on your training and make sure you increase your hydration,” said Carsley.

Environment Canada will issue an extreme heat advisory if temperatures stay in the mid-30s more than one day.

Temperatures are expected to cool in the Fraser Valley and Vancouver by mid next week.
