VANCOUVER -- Four years ago, the man RCMP say planned a Canada Day terror attack at the British Columbia legislature was too drunk and violent to be kept on as the guitarist in a heavy metal band.

But some time between March 2009 -- after his failed try-out for The Lust Boys in Victoria -- and this March, when police say the bombing conspiracy began, John Nuttall allegedly became a home-grown terrorist inspired by al-Qaida to kill fellow Canadians.

Colin Stuart, who's stage name is Tommy Thrust, the lead singer and guitarist for the Victoria-based band, says he was not surprised to find out Nuttall was in trouble with the law.

But Stuart says it did shock him to hear of Nuttall's alleged religious views that police have linked to the crime.

Stuart says the accused bomber was too often drunk and prone to fighting to be a part of the band, though he says he was a talented musician.

Nuttall's landlady in Surrey, B.C., says Nuttall and his partner and co-accused, Amanda Korody, moved into the basement of her home three years ago, and were polite though they struggled with drug addiction and poverty.
