No fewer than five helicopters were at work today trying to get the upper hand on a fire raging near Edgewood, about 100 km east of Kelowna.

The fire has grown from just a few hectares yesterday to about 90 hectares Saturday, and many people are quietly preparing to leave town should authorities issue an evacuation order.

But residents have been assured they're not at risk - even though the plumes of smoke that tower over the town to the south aren't very reassuring.

It's believed that the fire started on a ridge, and possibly is a campfire that got away.

However it's burning in a southerly direction, away from the town.

The forest service is preparing for the worst, making sure that there is a line of protection for the village if the winds happen to change.
