Driver who entered Canada 'without stopping' at B.C. border crossing arrested: police
A man who illegally blew through the Canada-U.S. border crossing in Surrey, B.C., Sunday morning has been arrested, according to authorities.
Canada Border Services Agency contacted local police around 8:45 a.m. to inform them a white pickup with Washington state licence plates had driven into the country “without stopping,” a statement from the Surrey Police Service said.
Soon after, a vehicle matching the description was seen driving dangerously and weaving into oncoming traffic on King George Boulevard near 64 Street.
“SPS officers then successfully stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver, who was the lone occupant of the pickup truck. Although vehicles were damaged, there were no injuries to the officers, the suspect or other drivers on the road,” the news release from the SPS said.
Photos and video from the scene show multiple SPS vehicles surrounding the pickup, which smashed through a guardrail and landed in a shallow ditch.
CBSA, in an emailed statement to CTV News, confirmed it is investigating the incident, saying the driver failed to stop at the primary inspection booth at the Pacific Highway crossing.
“Travellers wishing to enter Canada must present themselves to the CBSA at a designated port of entry. Failure to report upon entry is a serious offence and may result in penalties or charges,” a spokesperson wrote.
“The CBSA works closely at all times with its enforcement partners to ensure that anyone attempting to enter Canada without reporting to the CBSA is located and brought to the CBSA for examination.”
Police urge anyone with information or video that could assist with the investigation to call 604-599-0502.
