The driver who destroyed a Lamborghini after losing control on a busy stretch of B.C. highway has now been handed a hefty fine.
The 27-year-old driver narrowly avoided slamming into other cars on Highway 99 in Surrey on Sunday before spinning out and crashing through a fence at the side of the road.
At one point the $200,000 vehicle was sliding sideways before it went over an embankment and caught on fire.
The driver and a 19-year-old woman in the passenger seat, both from Edmtonton, were unhurt, but police say the incident could have been much worse.
The driver told Mounties that the high-end car suffered a mechanical failure and it was overheating before the crash.
But a dashcam video captured by another motorist driving behind the pricey vehicle shows the Lamborghini losing control while attempting to pass other cars.
Witnesses say the Lamborghini was speeding with a Dodge Viper, and Mounties believe the video evidence suggests reckless driving.
Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said the driver now faces about $700 in fines.
“Charges have been laid by way of violation ticket for speeding, unsafe lane change as well as driving without due care and attention,” Cpl. Paquet said.
Thomas Boecker, who operates Scenic Rush, a tour business that allows visitors the chance to drive the Sea-to-Sky Highway in high-powered luxury cars, says anyone can drive a powerful car – but you need to be smart about it.
“Having a lot of driving experience certainly would have helped him get out of that situation, maybe, but maturity and common sense would prevent him from getting into it in the first place. He didn’t need to make that maneuver,” said Boecker.
“If you’re going to push it to the limit, save it for the racetrack."
