Fire crews in B.C. worked to battle two forest fires that cropped up suddenly Thursday.

On Vancouver Island, Mounties in Sooke evacuated some area residents after a structure fire spread to a neighbouring forest.

The fire, in the Carpenter and West Coast roads area, broke out at approximately 1 p.m.

Sooke Fire Chief Steve Sorenson told CFAX radio the home was a total loss.

An emergency reception area was opened at the Sooke Community Centre for evacuees, but the evacuation order was lifted by 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, fire crews in the Fraser Valley were dispatched to extinguish a small forest fire sparked on Vedder Mountain in Chilliwack.

The blaze, measuring just over half an acre, is considered Rank 2 – a vigorous ground fire. Crews estimated it was 25 per cent contained by Thursday evening.

Marg Drysdale of the Coastal Fire Centre said the fire was being fought by a dozen crew members and a helicopter.

She said the fire is an a remote wooded area near Yarrow.

It's unclear what sparked the fire, but officials suspect it was human-caused.
