Sidney-North Saanich residents have been put on alert after RCMP were called out to several cougar sightings over the past few days but could not find the wild cat.

Five sightings were reported in close proximity within the peninsula area and RCMP believe it is the same cat.

Conservation officers were notified of each sighting and the local school district has also been advised to keep a close watch over school children.

First the cougar was first spotted Thursday near Hillgrove and Sumac roads in North Saanich, and twice again on Friday near West Saanich Road and Osprey Place. On Sunday, the cougar was observed on Eagle Way and then shortly after on Elderberry Way.

RCMP are also advising residents to be careful bringing pets outdoors and to visit the Conservation Service of British Columbia's website to learn what to do in a cougar encounter.
