Victoria residents with small children and pets are being warned to watch out for a cougar that was spotted in the James Bay area Thursday morning.

Mike Hill said his neighbour caught the cougar sizing him up while he napped in his backyard.

“[He] saw it just out of his window, just where I was sleeping,” Hill told CTV News. “He said it kind of looked at me and jumped the fence and left.”

The animal was also seen quietly roaming in the yard of a neighbouring daycare, though there were no children outside at the time.

Police scoured the area for the wildcat but came up empty-handed. Authorities said they can’t confirm whether the animal was a cougar.

Area residents are asked to be extra vigilant in case the cat is still on the prowl.
