One man is dead after a shooting in Coquitlam at approximately 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

A resident called police after a man banged on the door of his home on Mason Avenue near Coast Meridian Road, saying he had been shot and asking for help.

Police and emergency crews arrived on the scene to find the victim still alive but in severe distress. He died shortly afterward in front of the home.

Cpl. Dale Carr with the Integrated Homicide Team (IHIT) said investigators are working on the case.

"We're taking every precaution here," he said. "We're gathering forensic evidence, we're canvassing the area, going door to door, to learn from the neighbours."

Carr said preliminary investigations show the deceased and the resident were not known to each other, and that the resident was understandably shaken up.

The victim has not been identified and officials cannot say whether the shooting was targeted or gang-related.

A neighbour who wishes to remain anonymous says he heard as many as eight shots.

Police and IHIT are asking anyone with information to contact police or Crimestoppers.
