Engineers are inspecting the SkyTrain bridge over the Fraser River after a piece of concrete from the span was discovered on the ground below in New Westminster.
TransLink official Ken Hardie says the seven-kilogram chunk of cement broke off some time ago and was found only recently by the owner of a parking lot.
He says the piece likely came loose as the result of the freezing and thawing of the cement and he's been told by engineers that it did not come from a load-bearing portion of the bridge.
As a result he says there's no safety issue with the bridge, which is almost 20 years old.
Hardie says engineers will inspect the entire span for any other problems with concrete and repairs will be made, but the bridge will not have to be shut down.
Recently, some welding repairs were needed to the supports for the bridge deck at the north end of the span.
