Classes at a Delta school have been cancelled for several days following a suspicious fire in one of its classrooms early this morning.
Fire crews were called to Heath Traditional Elementary on 72nd Avenue in Delta just after 2 a.m.
They were able to put the flames out quickly, but not before one classroom was partially gutted.
There's also a lot of smoke and water damage to the rest of the school.
School officials said the school would not be able to re-open for grades 1 to 7 until Wednesday because contractors are still clearing the smoke smell from the building.
“They'll need at least the next 36 hours to run a hydroxyl machine and manually wipe down surfaces. This will be more effective than simply aerating the space with large blowers,” said Deneka Michaud, manager of communications for the Delta School District.
Officials aren't sure if the fire started inside or outside the building.
No one was injured in the blaze.
