Criminal charges have been laid against a 47-year-old Hope resident in connection with a racist tirade over a parking spot dispute.
The two-minute video taken on Oct. 21 shows an enraged man wearing a mixed martial arts T-shirt spitting a slew of racist terms at Ravi Duhra, a Canadian lawyer of South Asian descent, who is filming the incident on his phone.
Police say the confrontation began when the passenger of a large truck took issue with a $110 ticket issued by a parking enforcement officer. Duhra, who was passing by, says when he took out his phone to record the heated argument, he became a target.
The man can be heard in the video shouting a wide range of racist insults, and at one point, he even raises his fist in a salute and shouts: "White power!" At another moment in the video, the man pulls out his phone and stands directly in front of Duhra.
He is also heard yelling: “Go back to India.”
Abbotsford Police announced Monday that Karry Vernon Corbett is charged with two counts of assault, one count of uttering threats and one count of causing a disturbance.
Police have issued a warrant for Corbett and are actively trying to find him.
Const. Ian MacDonald said the remarks in the video are "disturbing" and hopes anyone who knows Corbett's whereabouts will contact authorities.
B.C.'s hate crime unit was brought in to help with the case.
Duhra told CTV News he felt angered and saddened by the incident.
"There are people like this out there and if you don't get exposed to it, if you don't see it, you tend to think it doesn't happen," he said.
