The mayor of Delta is calling on Metro Vancouver to let children play in sprinklers during the summer.
Region-wide water restrictions that took effect Saturday have just a few exemptions, for activities such as gardening and car-washing.
But Delta Mayor Lois Jackson told CTV News the rules should be relaxed to let children cool off, too .
“The water regulations are from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the morning. What about little children in the summer hot days that want to play through the sprinkler? I was told they can’t do that,” Jackson said.
Metro Vancouver has stood by the bylaws, despite Jackson’s opposition, and violators can face $100 fines.
Jackson said she's looking to remedy the situation in Delta but the bylaw could stand, and people could be penalized in the other Metro Vancouver municipalities.
“It makes no sense. It makes no sense to me at all,” Jackson said.
The bylaws, which split up the days and times that residential and non-residential addresses can sprinkle their lawns will be in effect until Sept. 30.
Metro Vancouver suggests that only an hour of watering a week is needed for a healthy lawn.
